Ask Brad: The Home and Garden Tool Expert
The Handler System™ inventor, Brad Blanchard, shares tips and advice on home and garden tools and projects. This week he shares the best ways to maintain and store yard tools for the winter.
What is the proper way to store yard tools?
Taking care of your yard tools is one of the best ways to ensure they continue to stay in top working condition for years to come. During the winter, you may not use your yard tools as often, so to ensure they stay in the best condition, it is important to give them a little extra care and store them away properly.
Keep Tools Clean
Keeping your tools clean may seem like common sense, but it is an important first step in any maintenance program. After each use, be sure to wash off any dirt or debris from your shovels, rakes, and brooms. The easiest way to do this is to run the tool under a hose until it is clean. For items that rust, you should remove the deposits with steel wool. Some metal components can also be oiled or buffed before they are stored away.
The Handler System™ is designed with advanced aerospace materials that are able to withstand even the most strenuous abuse. That said, it is best to clean them after each use so they stay in top working condition. The Handler System™ interchangeable heads can be hosed off with water and hung to dry.
Ideal Storage Conditions
Another important factor in maintaining your tools is to keep them in a safe and secure location. Avoid stacking shovels, rakes, and hoes on top of each other in a corner where they can easily become tangled. Never leave a rake flat on the floor where it may be stepped on. The best way to store large yard tools is to hang them on a wall. The Handler System™ features a state-of-the-art space-saving wall mount system for convenient access and safe storage. The Handler System™ comes with individual wall mounts for each of the four head attachments and the handle, thus creating a flexible organization system that eliminates the clutter of traditional yard tools. Additionally, wall mounts can be positioned out of harm’s way for young children.
Tools should be stored or hung in a garage, workspace, or storage area that is dry and well ventilated. To prevent damage, it is important to make sure tools are not at risk for sitting in standing water or on a damp floor.
It is important to take the time to maintain and organize your yard tools, especially during the off-season. By doing so, you help ensure that they will stay in top condition for years to come, and will be easily accessible when you need them.
