An Endodontist’s Guide to Relieving Anxiety Surrounding Root Canal Treatment

By spreading information about modern root canal treatment, dentists and endodontists can relieve patient anxiety and, ultimately, save more teeth. Root canal treatment is an endodontist’s most essential tool when it comes to saving natural teeth. Dentists and endodontists will agree that the majority of their patient visits, outside of routine appointments, involve some form of root canal treatment. The problem is that most patients don’t have a clear understanding of what root canal treatment actually is. Since people tend to fear what they don’t understand, Professional Endodontics believes it is our responsibility as experts to spread honest information about modern root canal treatment. Approaching Misconceptions about Root Canal Treatment Most patients don’t understand that root canal treatment refers to a variety of treatment plans that involve entering or repairing the root canal. Many people associate the term with the sensationalized reputation it gets from movies and a lingering stigma from the past. It’s important to make sure that patients are aware of the advances that have been made to make root canal treatment a quick and fairly painless process. In order to do this, specialists have a responsibility to dispel the myths that surround the treatment. The most commonly [...]

Professional Endodontics Celebrates Six Years with MDA’s Mission of Mercy

The Michigan Mission of Mercy event provides dental treatment to low-income families who may not have access otherwise. Professional Endodontics planted its roots in Detroit, Michigan in 1951. Since then, our practice has diligently served the communities of southeastern Michigan, branching out to three new state-of-the-art facilities in Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, and Southfield. At Professional Endodontics, we recognize that without our community, we would not exist. We appreciate and admire the people that allow us to do what we love where we love to do it. That’s why we made the decision six years ago to partner with the Michigan Dental Association (MDA) in their goal to make an impact in Michigan communities. By witnessing the change that the Mission of Mercy event has brought to so many lives, Professional Endodontics was inspired to strengthen our efforts in supporting our wonderful community. What is the Mission of Mercy event? Put simply, the main objective of a Mission of Mercy is to bring dental professionals to the community for patients that might not have access to them otherwise. Through a system of portable dental stations set up in a large public arena, the event offers a 100-chair dental clinic [...]

Endodontic Microsurgery Can Save Teeth when Root Canal Treatment Cannot

To strengthen your practice, consider partnering with Professional Endodontics and offering your patients access to contemporary endodontic microsurgery in the hands of highly trained specialists. Though conventional, nonsurgical root canal therapy will always be the preferred route for any endodontic proplem, there are instances in which this method of treatment cannot save the tooth. For those instances, endodontists will resort to microsurgery. Endodontic microsurgery—more formally referred to as apicoectomy—is in a general sense “the treatment performed on the root apices of an infected tooth, followed by placement of a filling (retrofilling) to seal the root end.” (ENDODONTICS: Colleagues for Excellence) Initially endodontic surgery was a somewhat primitive in procedure. Endodontists, oral surgeons, and general practitioners performed the surgeries using a round bur attached to a straight hand piece to prepare the canal, and used amalgam as the root-end filling material. Thanks to technological advances, endodontic microsurgery has seen great improvements in rates of success. At Professional Endodontics, our specialists utilize these advances every day, and by doing so, have saved teeth that would otherwise be subject to extraction. What’s New in Microsurgery? Research and technological advances have led to the refinement of the techniques, materials, and instruments used to execute [...]

Professional Endodontics Celebrates Eleven Years of Root Canal Awareness Week

Root Canal Awareness Week brings public awareness to endodontics so that patients and general dentists know to contact an endodontic specialist for root canal treatment. Endodontists play an important role in dental health, yet not many people even know they exist. That’s why the American Association of Endodontics (AAE) established Root Canal Awareness Week eleven years ago. The goal is to inform patients and dental professionals of the role endodontists play, to recognize the value of natural teeth and to alleviate fears surrounding root canal treatment. Endodontists’ advanced training, specialized techniques, and superior technologies make them the best choice for root canal treatment and other more serious dental issues. By collaborating with an endodontist, dental practices can offer reassurance to their patients that in the case of a dental emergency, they are in the hands best-equipped to save their tooth. Root Canal Awareness Week begins the week of May 7th, so be sure to participate by spreading information and kind words about endodontists and their practice. Specialists in Saving Teeth Endodontists specialize in saving and maintaining tissue in and around the root canal. This means that an endodontist is usually working in a space that is about the size of [...]
