Anthony Soave works continually to create a service-oriented culture within each of his diverse businesses. This includes the Soave Enterprises affiliate MPS Group. With their willingness to serve and customer-focused mindset, MPS Group employees make themselves indispensable while serving on-site with suppliers and throughout their community.
Hubbard High Science Fair
MPS Group’s Lou Rossi and George Naff, who work within the GM Lordstown Complex, exemplified this attitude when they took to the schools volunteered to assist with the local Hubbard High School Science Fair this spring. Volunteers from various areas of the complex served as judges for the 97 school projects. MPS Group’s Rossi reviewed the students’ work in physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, consumer science and environmental science. The men helped select the 20 projects eligible to continue on to the regional science fair at Youngstown State University.
MPS Resource Manager Jeff Dorer, on assignment at GM’s Component Holdings (GMCH) Wyoming, and the plant’s Environmental Engineering Department recently spent two afternoons with 6th and 7th graders from Rockford Middle School. This teaching opportunity was coordinated through a partnership with the West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) and their Teach for the Watershed (T4W) program.
Teach for the Watershed
T4W is an interactive, watershed education program based on Michigan’s science curriculum standards. With the help of a model provided by WMEAC, Jeff and his co-workers demonstrated how a watershed is impacted by various pollutant sources, such as construction sites, dairy farms, golf courses, agricultural fields and homes. The hands-on approach is popular with students, and the highlight of the demonstration was when students made it “rain” on their watershed to watch the “pollutants” make their way to the lake.
During the spring, the volunteer team will continue their lessons with in-water invertebrate counts at a local stream. Perhaps Rossi, Dorer and Naff even inspired future Soave Enterprises employees by their above-and-beyond efforts. They certainly inspire current Soave Enterprises employees to apply the standards of community service encouraged by giving back to important local groups.
