Soave Enterprises Hosts a Cook-Off
Employees at CITY Beverage-Arlington Heights took this concept to heart by organizing a series of cook-offs to benefit their local food pantry. At each cook-off, cold beer from CITY Beverage-Arlington Heights met its perfect counterpart – steaming hot chili. This deeply satisfying matchup was the featured attraction for those who came to help to raise money for the local non-profit, Des Plaines Food Pantry.
Participants sampled eighteen different “secret recipes” then voted for their favorite. Bragging rights and prizes went to the top three contenders. A nearby restaurant even helped out by donating some of their award-winning chili for comparative tasting.
Benefits Given to Local Food Bank
However, the biggest winner of all was the food pantry who received four oversized bins of canned food and $300 to help fill their shelves. Just one in a series of cooking contests held throughout the year by CITY Beverage, this popular theme caught on companywide with more than 50 Soave team members attending.
Encouraged and endorsed by General Manager Steve McGrath, the idea was a collaborative effort. Pricing Analyst Michelle Lipecki contributed to the concept by suggesting a charity benefit from the competition.
Supporting those in Need
According to recent U.S. Census reports, over 44 million Americans live within the “near poor” economic band. These reports take into account cash income, government benefits, and basic non-discretionary expenses to determine the poverty status. Those households are generally just one unexpected expense away from not being able to provide basic necessities such as food and shelter.
The Des Plaines Food Pantry was established in 1971 by the Women’s Fellowship Circle of the First Congregational Church of Des Plaines. They offer food, clothing, and small household items to local needy families and individuals. As a non-profit organization, the pantry now serves over 1,000 per month.
“With so many in our community struggling to make ends meet, CITY Beverage-Arlington Heights wanted to turn our fun activity into a fundraiser,” explained Sales Administrator Julie Joseph. “However, it’s a good thing we’re a beer distributor because some of the chili entries were so excruciatingly hot, just plain water wouldn’t have put out the fire in my mouth!”
