The ASRM Speaks Out about the Need for Accessible Reproductive Care

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine advocates for more affordable and accessible infertility care for patients in the United States.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has published a white paper outlining issues patients face when trying to access affordable and effective infertility care. The Society states that only an estimated 24 percent of infertile couples in the United States can access every care benefit they need to become pregnant. This leaves nearly three quarters of infertile couples without the care they need to treat infertility and realize their goal of starting or expanding their family. Within the publication, ASRM outlines twenty-five different actionable items that can be addressed in the coming years to help improve reproductive health care throughout the United States.

The publication was released April 5th, prior to National Infertility Awareness Week and is a valuable resource for those looking to support and advocate for better reproductive care. The paper was based on information shared during the 2015 Access to Care Summit during which leadership and healthcare experts from around the world came together to explore the issues of accessing quality reproductive care in the U.S. including infertility treatments. The goal of the summit was to better understand the ways care can be improved and to develop an actionable plan for bringing those changes to fruition to help infertile couples across the country.

In addition to seeking quality reproductive health care and infertility treatment from clinics and specialists, couples can also access quality infertility care in the privacy of their home. For example, products like the Conception Kit® at-home system provide patients with an effective and intimate way to address common infertility issues such as low sperm count, low sperm motility, and an acidic vaginal pH environment.

The Conception Kit® can be obtained by prescription and includes a three-month supply of ovulation kits to help the couple determine the optimal time for intercourse. It also includes an innovative medical device known as the Conception Cap® which is used to protect sperm and place them in direct proximity with the cervical opening so they have the best chance of reaching the egg. After sex, semen is collected and transferred to the Conception Cap® which is then placed over the cervical opening where sperm can then survive up to six hours, giving them a better opportunity to penetrate the cervix.

The Conception Kit® at-home system is much more affordable than expensive clinical treatments and can be used early during the conception process while a couple may be waiting for insurance approval for more invasive treatments or fertility testing. The Conception Kit® can also be used in combination with fertility medications. The Conception Kit® is available by prescription and for many patients covered under pharmacy insurance benefits. It is both an accessible and affordable treatment option for couples who are looking to increase their chances of getting pregnant.
