Home care providers from Alameda County ComForcare are educating others about the signs and symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.ComForcare Home Care

Castro Valley, CA March 2013 – ComForcare in Alameda County is working with families and individuals in their community to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.  The home care agency provides non-medical services for elderly clients, including comprehensive Alzheimer’s care and is committed to improving the quality of life for Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are a serious concern for many seniors, and it is important to identify symptoms early in order to provide helpful and necessary support.  In a recent presentation, Alameda County ComForcare outlined ten important signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease from the Alzheimer’s Association that families, spouses, and friends can watch for including:

–          Memory loss that disrupts daily life

–          Challenges in planning or solving problems

–          Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, work, or leisure

–          Confusion with time or place

–          Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships

–          New problems with words in speaking or writing

–          Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps

–          Decreased or poor judgment

–          Withdrawal from work or social activities

–          Changes in mood and personality

ComForcare works with clients in all stages of dementia, including those afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease.  Dementia is a general syndrome that includes two or more symptoms involving memory, language, thought, behavior, personality, mood, or visual and spatial abilities.  Alzheimer’s disease is a specific progressive degenerative disease that targets the mind and memory.  Generally speaking, Alzheimer’s patients suffer from the loss of neurotransmitters or the development of plaques that interfere with nerve pathways.  There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, and medications only slow symptoms, but do not stop the disease from progressing.

In addition to educating clients, families, and the community about the signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Alameda County ComForcare also provides reliable and compassionate home care for individuals suffering from dementia.  Services are available on a part-time or full-time basis to meet the needs of each client and their family.  Alzheimer’s care providers are professionally trained to assist with daily living tasks including personal grooming, light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation, and companionship.
